DISCIPLINE
Not performance. Restraint—the ability to choose the mission over the impulse.
By Alexander Thomas Moore
I had been leaving pieces of it behind for years—in plans, coaching documents, development outlines, business notes, culture manuals and the things I wrote while I was still trying to understand what I was building.
FROM THE AUTHOR'S NOTE · DCADCA grew from coaching, development, leadership, family and the uncomfortable distance between what we ask of other people and what we are willing to demand from ourselves.
Not performance. Restraint—the ability to choose the mission over the impulse.
Not perfection. Loyalty to the work when the feeling, attention or applause disappears.
Not confession for its own sake. Telling the truth about your choices, then changing the behavior.
“I spent years saying those words to athletes. Eventually life asked me if I meant them when nobody else was standing in front of me.”
“One standard you decide applies to you too.”
“Discipline. Consistency. Accountability. Then again. Alignment.”
I built DCA around a standard I expected athletes and young people to live by. Eventually the framework had to turn back on me.
That's the point of this book. Explanation is not absolution. Leadership is not exemption. The standard matters most when applying it costs you something.
“I'M HUMAN. I HAVE FAULTS. WE ALL DO. I JUST REFUSE TO HIDE BEHIND MINE.”
Discipline. Consistency. Accountability. Then again. Alignment.
